Mixed Metals Masterpiece

Kitchen and Living Room Remodel

Minneapolis, MN

Kitchen and living room before remodel

An unfortunate roof leak and water damage sparked a full remodel of this open but poorly laid out kitchen and the adjacent living room.

The homeowners had recently refaced the cabinetry, however, they didn’t love the quality of the craftsmanship and the kitchen layout wasn’t improved during the facelift. The original island was an awkward L-shaped leaving the sink 8-feet away from the cooktop. The island had no drawers for silverware near the dishwasher. The ovens were far away from everything else, and all the appliances were old and ready to be replaced.

These homeowners love to entertain and bake. The homeowners requested their new kitchen to include a single oven, speed oven, and a 36” range with a 3rd oven to accommodate hosting large family gatherings and parties. A built-in 42” fridge holds plenty of food; the 36” gas range has a griddle in the center for pancakes and smash burgers. The range is crowned with a custom Vent-A-Hood range hood with 2 different stainless-steel finishes.

We designed a new bookcase at the end of the run to stack inspirational cookbooks for the delicious meals for two or ten! In addition, there are 7 tray dividers over the ovens for all the trays and platters.

For additional storage at the range, a pull-out spice rack and a utensil holder flank both sides. We added stainless steel doors with frosted glass and glass shelves for contrast, helping the darker cabinetry feeling open and airy while concealing the everyday dishes.

In addition to the new storage features at the island and range, the goal was to make the kitchen more functional. A new pantry was designed featuring big drawers, pull outs for small appliances, and a tall door for brooms and the vacuum replaced the old double oven location.  A small walk-through butler’s pantry straddles the kitchen and formal dining room.  It is the perfect spot for the coffee maker and wine and liquor storage.  The lit glass cabinets add a cheery bright feel to the enclosed space.

The homeowners loved their original gold light fixtures and cabinet hardware, so we reused them and added some more gold and metallic elements with gold bezels behind the range knobs and a gold faucet.  A custom Vent-A-Hood range hood was designed with a mix of polished stainless and brushed stainless to sit between the 2 stainless glass door cabinets. The mixed metals feel modern and intentional and are a nice deviation from the traditional matchy-matchy designs you see in most new construction these days.

The new island was repositioned 48” in front of the range and has cabinets on both sides for extra storage. It includes additional drawer storage, a pull-out trash and recycle cabinet, and a much-needed cutlery divider drawer adding amazing function. Bright, maintenance free Cambria Quartz countertops flow down both sides of the island in a waterfall application that is a true showstopper.

Adjacent to the kitchen in the hearth room, there was a huge black carved fireplace surround.  It was dark, heavy, and no longer the style the homeowners were going for. They opted for a new linear gas fireplace featuring glass pebbles and faux logs. A mirrored back styled into the fireplace reflects the dancing flames and makes the glass pebbles sparkle. Completing the space, a custom floating mantel was fabricated to match the kitchen cabinetry with silver leaf travertine tile echoing the mixed metals in the kitchen. The new crystal chandelier in antique gold adds a show stopping wow factor to this once outdated room.
