Sophisticated Simplicity

Kitchen before remodel

A couple in retirement came to us after purchasing a 1990 twin home as part of their efforts to downsize.

Their goal was to take the tired, builder-grade kitchen and turn it into the dazzling centerpiece of their new home.

The clients’ list of must-haves included a tiled backsplash that made a statement, space for a TV, state-of-the-art appliances including a properly vented hood, switching the range from electric to gas, and a full-sized French door refrigerator. They wanted as much additional storage as possible to create an uncluttered and efficient kitchen. They also requested materials and products that required little to no maintenance. Lastly, the LVP flooring was new, so they wanted to keep it.

Due to the townhouse’s structure and the clients’ budget constraints, we were unable to make any structural changes, including removing the dated soffits. The designer’s unique approach was to keep the layout very close to the original to preserve the flooring, while incorporating the soffits into the final design and still providing the much-needed additional storage.

A new full-height upper cabinet with a counter-level appliance garage was fitted to the ceiling on one side of the soffit, while cabinetry on the opposite wall was extended to the ceiling in front of the soffit. A new, properly vented 300 CFM range hood was installed over the new gas range. The updated pantry included a built-in microwave with ample storage above and below. A custom cabinet above the full-sized refrigerator was designed to house the television. Under-cabinet lighting was added to both the cabinetry and open shelves to improve task lighting throughout the space.

The cabinetry finishes were selected in a combination of TFL textured melamine for the uppers and a durable painted finish for the bases. The sophisticated flush doors and drawer fronts offered a clean, elegant look with the ease of care the homeowners were looking for. Sequoia granite countertops were chosen to complement the gray and blue-green hues of the cabinetry. A 1×1 mosaic tile backsplash was installed in a custom wavy layout, adding a whimsical flair to the space.
