The Refined Ripple
A Light-Filled Primary Bath, Thoughtfully Reimagined
Not every remodel requires a complete reconfiguration to feel transformative. This primary bathroom renovation demonstrates how thoughtful planning, purposeful material choices, and custom details can elevate an already well-laid out space into one that is beautiful, functional, and built for long-term living.
Client Goals and Vision
The homeowners approached this project with a clear understanding of how they use their space day to day. Because they do not get ready at the same time, they chose a single-sink vanity in order to maximize storage and countertop space rather than defaulting to a double vanity.
Their goals included:
- New flooring that is slip-resistant, and easy to clean and maintain
- A longer vanity with increased storage and generous counter space
- A single-sink layout that better fits their routine
- A shower with an integrated bench
- Grab bars for safety and aging in place
- A separate handheld shower for flexibility as well as ease of cleaning the shower walls and glass.
- Frameless shower glass for a clean, open look
- High-quality fixtures and materials designed for longevity and ease of maintenance
This is the primary bathroom and is used daily, so comfort, durability, and accessibility were central to every design decision.
Design Potential of the Space
One of the greatest assets of this bathroom was the vaulted ceilings which featured a skylight. Natural light fills the space without having to worry about privacy or planning around a window. The vaulted ceilings make the average size bathroom feel open, airy. and much bigger than it is. The original layout functioned well, allowing us to focus on updating finishes and improving usability rather than altering the footprint.
To add depth and visual interest, we tiled the entire wall behind the vanity and carried that same tile into the shower. This continuity helps visually connect the two zones while adding subtle texture that responds beautifully to the changing natural light.
Design Challenges and Material Selection
The most significant challenge during the design phase was tile selection. With large expanses of tile on both the vanity wall and in the shower, it was essential that the tile felt timeless, refined, and visually interesting without overwhelming the space.
Careful consideration was given to scale, pattern, and finish to ensure the tile complemented the abundant and ever-changing natural light, while maintaining a calm, cohesive feel.
Construction Experience
This bathroom was part of a whole-house remodel, and the construction phase progressed smoothly. Thorough planning and coordination helped the bathroom installation stay on schedule and integrate seamlessly with the broader renovation.
Custom Details That Add Personality and Function
A standout feature of this remodel is the custom vanity by Crystal Cabinet Works. The longer vanity, made possible by the single-sink layout, provides ample storage and uninterrupted counter space.
To give the vanity visual interest without sacrificing cleanability, we designed a raised and recessed toe kick and tiled it to match the floor. This creates the appearance of a floating vanity while avoiding the hard-to-clean void that often comes with true floating designs.
Open cubbies at the base of the vanity provide accessible towel storage and add a warm, spa-like element to the room.
Smart Design and Construction Solutions
This project incorporates several thoughtful solutions that balance beauty, safety, and long-term durability:
- A small half wall was added between the vanity and the shower, allowing the vanity to run wall to wall while discreetly concealing the shower bench.
- Frameless shower glass was installed to maintain a clean, modern aesthetic and allow light to flow freely throughout the space.
- Grab bars were integrated into the shower design to support accessibility and safety, without compromising the overall look of the space.
- A separate handheld shower was included to aid in seated bathing, improve accessibility, and make routine cleaning of the shower walls and glass easier.
- The original heavily textured flooring was replaced with a porcelain tile that provides subtle traction while remaining easy to clean.
- Cambria quartz countertops were selected for the vanity for their durability and low maintenance.
- Corian was used on the shower curb, wall caps, and all four sides of the shower niche to eliminate grout in high-wear areas and ensure long-term performance and ease of cleaning.
Each element was chosen with daily use, safety, and longevity in mind.
The Finished Result
The completed primary bathroom feels bright, calm, and intentionally designed for both present-day living and the future. Natural light from the skylight highlights the layered textures, custom details, and thoughtful accessibility features that make the space as practical as it is beautiful.
This remodel reflects our belief that great design is not about adding unnecessary features, but about understanding how a space is used and creating solutions that support real life, now and for years to come.
